University Of Abuja (ASUU) wants VC Sacked

The University of Abuja Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday passed a vote of no confidence on the Vice-Chancellor, Professor James Adelabu, calling for his sack. The union, after an emergency meeting, also threatened to initiate a strike if the governing council fails to accede to its demands. Chairman of the union who is also a member of the governing council, Dr. Clement Chup, told Daily Trust on phone yesterday that the union was not impressed with the way the vice-chancellor has handled the academic crisis in the university in the last two weeks. The Federal Government suspended three programmes of the university- Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Engineering for non-accreditation resulting in the students not able to graduate years after due date. Chup said the vice-chancellor while meeting the Federal Government to find a way to address the problem, did not consult with his management team. The union chairman said the governing council met on the 11th to decide what action to take to save the university but another meeting scheduled for the 12th did not hold due to the absence of the chairman. But the splinter group in a communiqué signed by Drs. Ya’u Damagun and Peter Maidoki, chairman and secretary respectively, accused the chapter chairman of ASUU, Dr. Clement Chup, of working “consistently to disrupt the peace, and academic culture of the university. The Integrity Group said that “as far as the current situation is concerned, everything is on track to set the university on the road to attaining full accreditation for all its academic.
